Mirror image

I look in the mirror and think

“That’s not my face.”

It may be the face I know,

But it’s not the one people see.

It’s reversed.

It’s just a mirror image,

Distorted and untrue.

Is it closer than it seems?

Is it something that can be shattered?

It’s the product of reflection

A trick of the light

As false as a moonbeam.

Yet, when I think of myself

It’s this reflection that comes to mind,

As though it were genuine.

As though it were true.

Just once, I’d like a glimpse

Of my face-to-face face

And I wonder if I’d like it,

Or want to walk away.
